3 Steps to a Festive (and Safe) Fourth of July Celebration

Have fun with patriotic decor without going overboard.

With its festive outdoor gatherings, delectable food displays, and impressive fireworks displays, it's no wonder that the Fourth of July is many people's favorite holiday. Not only does it celebrate the country's independence, it is also right in the middle of summer, so amazing weather is probably (hopefully!) a sure thing. So you better capitalize on the situation and throw a stellar party that will not soon be forgotten. Here's how:

Minimize Flags
While you definitely want to show your American pride, you do not want your backyard to look like you went to the dollar store and found everything you possibly could with a flag on it. A better option is to stick with the colors of the country and go from there. For example, you can start off with a stark white tablecloth. Then, place cherry red table runners the short way over the table, kind of connecting the seats across from each other (so if you have six place settings, you will have three runners). Finally, put navy blue cloth napkins atop simple white plates. The look will be classy while still letting everyone know you are proud of your country.

Fourth of July is about celebrating your freedom while enjoying time with your loved ones.

Re-purpose Cans
From creamed corn to baked beans, most July 4th menus involve at least a few types of canned goods. Instead of throwing them straight into the recycling bin, employ them as your centerpieces first. Pick up some festive craft or scrapbooking paper and simply wrap them around the cans. Sunflowers are the ideal summer flower to place in the center of them, but you could also opt for pinwheels, lollipops, or the like. If cans aren't your thing, you can always fill a glass vase with layers of red, white, and blue candies. Bring in casual touches, like writing the menu on a chalkboard or serving the desserts with a red wagon, and the vibe of your get together will be the perfect blend of formal and fun.

Prevent Fires
Yes, it is true that fireworks are one of the biggest draws to the holiday, but it's best to leave them to the professionals. However, that doesn't mean you can't have any fun. Instead of breaking out the flammables, why not stick with noisemakers (even pots and wooden spoons will suffice in a pinch)? The kids will love them (your neighbors, probably not), and you will still make a lot of great memories together without having to make a trip to the ER.

When it comes down to it, the Fourth of July is all about celebrating your freedom while enjoying time with your loved ones. So break out the barbecue, bring on the red, white, and blue, and let the festivities begin.
